"CORAIL is a tribute to coral as an ecosystem essential to our survival."
-
Photographic book - Edition Hemeria

CORAIL tells the story of the rebirth of an Indonesian fishing village. Now involved in restoring the coral reefs that surround them, they are the guarantors of the preservation of their resources. Using powerful, often spectacular images, this first book by Martin Colognoli, whose approach oscillates between the documentary and the artistic, is a hymn to the defence of biodiversity and a tribute to coral as an ecosystem essential to our survival.

What is the Coral book
-

The photographic book CORAIL is an immersion into the fragile world of coral and the communities that depend on it. It shows solidarity, respect and the link with living things. A world that is both raw and real, and at the same time dreamlike and fabulous. This book is therefore somewhere between art and documentary.

Using powerful, often spectacular images, the French photographer appeals for the preservation of these emblematic ecosystems through an artistic report that retraces six years of field experience. It is a hymn to the defence of biodiversity and a tribute to coral as an ecosystem essential to our survival.

Prefaced by
-

CORAIL has the honor of having a preface written by two prestigious personalities: Charlie Véron and Denis Allemand.

Charlie Veron or “the godfather of coral”, born in 1945 in Sydney, Charlie Veron is an Australian biologist specializing in the study of corals and their reefs. He named approximately 20% of the coral reefs and discovered and delineated the “Coral Triangle”. Chalie Veron is also an environmental activist.

Denis Allemand is a university professor of animal biology and scientific director of the Monaco Scientific Center. His main area of research concerns the physiology of marine organisms, mainly corals, and their use as model organisms to understand the major problems of biology (biomineralization, symbiosis, aging, etc.).

Available in bookstores and on the publisher HEMERIA's website.
-

Based on the original idea of Martin Colognoli, a team of professionals (artistic direction, publishing house, writing, printer, etc.) were able to give priority to the image.

Firstly by the choice of a large portrait format 34 cm by 25.5 cm of 156 pages, with a hard cover printed in screen printing, a beautiful paper pleasant to the touch.

The staging alternates spectacular photographs of the coral (alive or dead and returned to life), portrait photographs, and more abstract, contemplative photographs in black and white. It shows all the dimensions of Martin Colognoli's photographic work: both a desire to bear witness and a desire to offer more artistic work which aims to enhance the coral.

A book is printed in France after a year of collective work, sold at a unit price of €59 in bookstores or on the publisher HEMERIA's website!
